The 2023/2024 season of the German State Theater Timișoara is closed

In the 2023/2024 season, which ended with the performance on July 6, 2024, the German State Theater Timișoara (GSTT) produced six premieres: The Theater, Sidy Thal, boyz and girlz, The Servant of Two Masters, The Son and Cloud Tectonics, in collaboration with directors Clemens Bechtel, László Bocsárdi, Mădălin Hîncu, Ármin Rácz, Pascal Rambert and Niky Wolcz. Co-productions have been made with the French Institute (The Theatre), the Jewish State Theatre of Bucharest (Sidy Thal), the Classical Theatre "Ioan Slavici" Arad and the Hungarian State Theatre "Csiky Gergely" Timișoara (boyz and girlz). Two acclaimed performances from previous seasons were also revived: Nadirs by Herta Müller, directed by Niky Wolcz, and The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Eréndira and Her Heartless Grandmother by Gabriel García Márquez, directed by Yuri Kordonsky.

Performances of the theater have been selected in six festivals: the National Theatre Festival, the International Theatre Festivals in Sibiu, Oradea and Resita, X-FEST - Excelsior International Festival of Young Theatre in Bucharest and the Colloquium of National Minority Language Theaters.


In the period June 9-15, 2024, GSTT toured Germany with the performance Humans. For Sale, written and directed by Carmen Lidia Vidu, with three performances in Karlsruhe and Berlin, in collaboration with the Romanian Cultural Institute. The theater also toured the country, in Bucharest, Arad, Reșița, the Satu Mare region and Lugoj.

At the UNITER Awards Gala 2024, Irisz Kovacs was nominated in the category "Best Director" ("Lucian Pintilie" Award) for directing the production Tschick. Why I stole the car. The director was also awarded the "Iulian Vișa" Prize at the Sibiu International Theater Festival (FITS), which is awarded to young theater creators.



The 9th edition of the European Theater Festival "Eurothalia" took place from September 20 to 30, 2023, with 12 performances from Germany, Austria, Spain, Belgium, France, Latvia, Denmark, Greece, Northern Macedonia and Romania. The program included performances by famous companies and artists such as Rimini Protokoll, Burgtheater Wien, Agrupación Señor Serrano, Wim Vandekeybus.

The theatrical pedagogical activity culminated in two projects realized in collaboration with the "Nikolaus Lenau" Theoretical High School: the NiL Theatre Weekend on April 5-6, 2024 and the 22nd edition of The International Youth Theatre Festival in German Language from April 26 to May 1, 2024, with the participation of students from Croatia, Germany and Romania.



The end of June 2024 marked the 70th anniversary of GSTT. For three days, between June 27 and 29, 2024, there were film screenings, openings, performances, meetings with former and current creators of this theater, an occasion to evoke events from more than seven decades of existence of the German stage in Timișoara.
